I've been meaning to go through the pantry next to our fridge but there is always something more important or pressing. Saturday morning Jim was at class & I had the help of our 4 yo so we jumped in. To say it was daunting would be an understatement. After cleaning out all of the shelves I was pleased to find we only have 1 full shelf of non paleo compliant items. We now have a shelf that has snacks that are 4 yo friendly and the 1 shelf of items we need to use up and not replace.
I have 2 big bags of items that are off to homes that aren't paleo. Funniest item that I found was the bag of sour lollipops I bought for labor with that 4 yo. Never opened. I guess I need to clean out that pantry for reasons other than just paleo purging.
I know it may seem silly but knowing that our pantry is "safe" makes me happy. It is nice to know that I can reach in there & anything that I grab will be safe to use. We've played with this lifestyle for over a year and we've gone back & forth. If we don't have it we can't eat it or use it. Does that mean I will never cheat when out at a restaurant. Probably not. But it does mean that the cheats will only happen when outside our house. There will be no more 1 day that turns into a couple of days... a week... a month.. etc.
A day in our Paleo Life

Remember the old Nike Commercials "Just do it!"
As I said in my last post one of my primary goals this year is to get back in shape. The last couple of years have been rough for me, I have had neck surgery and a broken wrist in the last year (besides just wanting to spend time with my son). So I am really, really out of shape!
The gym that I am a member of and some times even go to offers classes in BJJ, Muay Thai and Crossfit. Every one there is really, really intense and serious. The idea of being the fat guy or the guy that is obviously the most out shape intimidates the hell out of me. So I am always very quick to find an excuse to not go (since New Years I have not been feeling well for instance).
Today, I really did not want to go to the Muay Thai class at lunch. Was today going to be another day that I just found an excuse? Surprisingly, I just told myself to go. If I don't start to go I will never get back to where I want to be (I use to be athletic and be at the point where I wouldn't be worried or intimidated). I hated going, hated the beginning of class (jumping rope...BLAH!) but then it started getting fun. No one was snickering at me!
By the end of the class I felt great and driving home I was really glad I went (that always actually seems to happen, when I decide to go!). It's funny when you are in a routine getting out to work out is easy. But when the routine gets mucked up or worse you completely go off the rails it is just hard. So my game plan for the immediate future is to "just do it," no matter how I feel going or in the beginning because if I don't take these first steps it will never get any better.

New Year...New Start
This is Jim.
Anne & I have been playing around with paleo for about the last year. We have done the Whole 30, and a Paleo Challenge at our local gym that I work out at (when I actually go). When we have followed the paleo life style (because that's what this is, not a diet) we feel so much better, have so much more energy and have noticeable improvement in body composition.
When we are following paleo Anne gets heavily into it (like going in on pastured pigs and grass fed cows). She even had to go out and buy a larger freezer for all the meat she was buying. We've found some really great recipes from sites like Paleo Parents and Everyday Paleo that really makes eating this way work.
As I said we always feel so much better when we are sticking to eating paleo. Not sure why but after a time we always fall off and then we say we are going to take a break and then the break gets longer and longer, before you know it we are back to our old ways (Pasta and Pizza are two of my biggest temptations).
So with the New Year we are both trying to start out fresh again. Anne has started to a 21 day sugar detox and getting back on the paleo wagon. For me, my goals are to get back on the paleo wagon and to start training again consistently. The point of the blog is to share this journey all of the ups and all of the downs.

21 Day Sugar Detox
Well I am started the 21 Day Sugar Detox by Balanced Bites. In the past Jim & I have done the Whole30 by Melissa & Dallas of Whole9 and had great results but then we fell off the wagon. There is always an excuse for not sticking with it.. and then 1 little cheat turns into days/weeks of not good food choices. I've decided that I need to completely purge our house of all non-paleo food choices. All cheats would need to involve going out to a restaurant. If I want something it will then end up being more portion controlled.
We both agree that we feel better. Not sure then why we keep sabotaging ourselves. :-(
